Medical Instruments

These photographs of mostly gynaecology and obstetrics medical instruments, were heavily inspired the use of photography in asylums the 19th century such as the ‘Iconographie Photographique de la Salpetriere’. Published as a number of books, the images un-consensually depicted women in hysterical attacks.

Furthermore, I drew inspiration from books such as 'The Burden Of Representation’ by John tagg. In this he wrote that early photographing put the power to  isolate the sitter “in a shallow contained space, turned full face and subjected to an un-returnable gaze”. This notion of the ‘un-returnable gaze’ inspiring my choice to only photograph objects throughout this project. An object cannot return the gaze of the viewer, and nor could the woman in the photographs.

It was important to the impact of medical misogyny on marginalise communities and the individualised experience of healthcare. This was also a key driver in my visual choices.
